Learning Slate
In the brave new world of YouTube, Flickr, and Twitter, how e-portfolios gather and treat ‘evidence’ is becoming an increasingly pressing issue. Traditional e-portfolios have often been restrictive in the kinds of evidence they can store. Although this makes sense in certain academic situations, this approach can become restrictive when taking a more open attitude towards ‘evidence’. With this in mind, MKMlabs has created Learning Slate.
Rethinking the e-portfolio
Learning Slate is a new, open approach to e-portfolios which seeks to embrace a wide spectrum of systems, applications, web sites and services that offer learners unique ways to track and document their activity. By integrating a range of services into a common pool of evidence, learners and educators are able to make use of the applications and evidence types that suit their learners, environments, and teaching styles.

This approach sees as much value in a YouTube video of a learner completing a task, or a tweet declaring success at an assigned activity as it does in a structured e-portfolio blog post stored within an institutional system. The application has been architected in such a way that it can be extended through the creation of access plugins. These plugins will allow the Learning Slate application to be accessed from within an existing system, such as a Moodle or Blackboard installation.
