Moodle Audio Recorder
We have always understood and appreciated the potential of VLEs like Moodle and Blackboard. Their use in the educational community has revolutionised the way that e-learning is used, bringing all the many benefits of interactive e-learning production, management and distribution to a huge audience.
Part of our philospohy is to work alongside these major providers to see where we can add value; so many of our customers and colleagues rely on these systems within their organisations.
Thousands of students worldwide
One project which we are particularly proud of is producing an open source audio recording tool for the Open University. This tool was developed as an extension to the Open University’s Moodle VLE system, the largest implementation of Moodle in the world, and now enables thousands of language students at the Open University to submit oral assessments online.
The initial sound recording is made in Flex and a Flash Media Server is used to convert the output to an MP3 format for greater accessibilty.

Flexible and future-proof
It was important for the tool to be developed in a fully flexible manner to allow later use in other applications, for example within e-learning topics or as a podcast recorder, amongst other things.
With reflective and informal input into courses and training becoming increasingly important, it is vital to have tools available to make this simple for the learner and easily accessible by the tutor.
Open source
Developed as part of an open source initiative, all source code for the tool is freely available and ready for tailoring or implementation.
We're currently preparing documentation for this project and will release the source code shortly, but you can expect to get:
- Flex working files for the interactive recorder
- PHP code for Moodle integration
- Back-end scripts for MP3 conversion
- Project and implementation documentation
